Natural Thread with a Matt Finish!
COTTY consists of 100% long staple, high quality mercerized* Egyptian cotton with a matt finish. This thread has a uniquely soft, warm feel and pleases with its natural appearance. Natural threads work best on soft fabrics, cotton, linen, cord, felt and velvet.
COTTY is available in size 30 for fine embroidery and seam applications – the typical handcrafted look.
*Mercerizing = Treatment of cotton with cold concentrated caustic soda under tension. The cotton acquires a new fine fibre structure. Due to the treatment with caustic soda, the cotton unwinds into an almost circular cross-section. Due to the changed light refraction, the gloss is increased. Dye uptake is improved and at the same time less dyestuff is needed. Tensile strength increases by 10 to 30 percent, abrasion resistance decreases by 20 – 30 percent. Shrinkage of mercerized cotton is not possible.

Cause of Discolouration: Often due to chlorine-based additives or spot removers in washing.

SULKY® Thread: Although highly resistant to heat, light, and perspiration, it is not chlorine-resistant—like all artificial silk threads.

Industry Standard: Chlorine additives are universally prohibited for viscose threads, indicated by a symbol on colour charts.

Chlorine Sensitivity: Discolouration varies by colour and chlorine concentration. Even partial discolouration of a design is possible.

Recommendation: For items exposed to heavy dirt or frequent washing (e.g. workwear), use POLY 40—a chlorine-resistant polyester thread.
